Growing Love

by Denise Roca
At ten, Eli dared Ava to race him across the creek. She won, then waited for him when he slipped. At fifteen, they shared earbuds on the school bus, pretending neither noticed their hands touching. At seventeen, life pulled them toward different dreams, but every goodbye ended with, "See you soon." On her twenty-first birthday, Ava grabbed a bag in it, the same pebble he'd secretly carried since that first race, wrapped with a note: You beat me once, and I've happily been chasing you ever since. She smiled, took his hand, and finally stopped running.

Inheritance

by Kayla Halsey
My grandmother said love wasn't fireworks. It was who remembered the broken latch, who noticed your silence had changed shape, who warmed the cold side of the bed before you arrived. I laughed when she told me. Years later, I found myself tightening your loose coat button while you spoke about nothing important. My hands knew before my heart admitted it. Some inheritances skip the blood and settle quietly into habit.

Predator to Prey

by ASE
Watching. Studying. He is my prey and I am the predator that will circle til its time to attack. Or at least that is what I thought. My phone vibrates with a notification. It’s HIM. The message reads, “When are the two of us going to go out together? Or are we going to play like children. I like you, let’s see what happens.” In that moment I knew I was caught. Trying not to catch his gaze there’s this feeling he is staring trying to catch mine. Feeling my cheeks get warm I respond with a question, “Date tonight?”
