She relaxed when she saw the text: Running late. Don’t wait up. Typical. He was always apologizing for something. The house felt too quiet, but she blamed the rain, soft, steady, filling the spaces between sounds. She kicked off her shoes, dropped her keys in the bowl, and called his name anyway. No answer
